One of our best newsletters yet, this edition contains the following stories:
Carolinas Rehabilitation recently partnered with Hocoma, Inc. to host a workshop on robotics in rehabilitation and test a machine called the Lokomat. Over the past few years, Carolinas Rehabilitation has begun to build a human performance laboratory that will be a specialized center for conducting research and testing leading-edge technologies such as the Lokomat.
Our patient story is about Jaymes Holden, a captain for a local police department and member of a SWAT team who recently was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome. His battle was long, but his determination and family support helped to make his recovery a success.
This issue's physician focus is on William M. Scelza, MD. Dr. Scelza is the director of the spinal cord injury program. His interest in exercise, sports and lifelong care in patients with spinal cord injuries stems from his own experience as an individual with a spinal cord injury since age 17.
Carolinas Rehabilitation now provides a dedicated chemical denervation clinic for spasticity and increased tone. This clinic, currently held once a month, provides patients convenient access to meaningful improvement in daily functioning.
Do you like dogs? Read about Baker, our facility dog. Baker has been a welcome addition to the recreation therapy department and has provided joy to our patients, their families and our team members.
The Adaptive Sports and Adventures Program recently hosted an adaptive ski clinic at Beech Mountain Ski and Resort Club. With 15 skiers participating, the event was a huge success.
