Children who are experiencing a debilitating illness or injury require special in-depth care. Carolinas Rehabilitation is proud to be the area's sole provider of children's inpatient rehabilitative services. Located within Levine Children's Hospital, our comprehensive and nationally recognized pediatric program allows us to serve every child, from infants born with congenital problems to teens with traumatic injuries. Our primary therapeutic goal is to help young children and adolescents lead longer and richer lives at the highest level of functioning possible.
Interdisciplinary Team Our comprehensive pediatric team brings many years of experience and expertise to the practice of pediatric rehabilitation. This team will individually tailor the patient's inpatient program to best meet the needs of the patient and work to return the patient to the highest level of functioning possible.
Once admitted, the patient will be assigned to this team, led by one of our dedicated pediatric rehabilitation physicians. This physician will work with all other rehabilitation professionals to design the best course of treatment for the patient. In addition to the physician, the team may include nurses, case managers, physical therapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, cognitive education specialists and social workers who are dedicated and experienced in this unique type of care.
Rehabilitation Care With two board-certified pediatric physiatrists on staff, Carolinas Rehabiliation brings to our patients and their families a level of care that few hospitals in the country can match. Only four board-certified pediatric physiatrists practice in North Carolina and fewer than 200 practice in the United States.
Our staff is experienced in working with pediatrics and are highly-specialized in their field. Many of our nursing staff members are Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurses (CRRN), and bring excellent functional skills and a comprehensive approach to their practice. We offer a high number of hours of intensive therapy during the inpatient stay, at least three hours per day. In addition, the therapy team works with the patient on the skills needed to perform a wide range of daily tasks before the patient returns home or to the community, so that they may live as independently as possible.
Specialty Services Inpatient services include aquatic therapy, school integration, group treatment to aid in socialization skills and modeling, mobility training, auditory testing and treatment, school assessment and consultation by cognitive education specialists, wheelchair training and neuro-developmental treatment.
Outpatient Services Our Outpatient Pediatric Program works with children of all ages who require therapy after discharge from a hospital. This interdisciplinary team works together to design treatment and community integration programs to help children with physical, cognitive and communication problems. Any child with challenges involving speaking, swallowing, mobility, hand use, academics or behavior can benefit from these programs.
