We are proud to offer one of the largest comprehensive Stroke Rehabilitation Programs in the Southeast. Our stroke program was awarded certification from the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and was one of the first facilities in the nation to apply for and receive this certification.
In North Carolina and much of the Southeast, stroke is the primary cause of functional and neurological disability. Recognizing its importance as a primary healthcare issue, our physiatrists conduct research that will allow for maximum recovery post-stroke.
Carolinas Rehabilitation is one of only five centers in the United States to have clinically studied post-stroke shoulder pain with implantable electrode simulation. We are also one of just a few centers in the country studying botulinum toxin and its utility in blocking neuromuscular transmission to alleviate the effects of spasticity. We are part of Carolinas Stroke Network, a comprehensive network that provides rapid, state-of-the-art treatment to patients suffering acute stroke.
Our goal is to maximize each individual's level of functioning and independence at home and in the community, and to provide education to the individual, family and caregiver.
Interdisciplinary Team Our stroke-dedicated interdisciplinary team of professionals completes comprehensive evaluations and develops individualized treatment programs.

Once admitted, each stroke patient will be assigned to this team, led by one of our dedicated board-certified, stroke specialized physicians. This physician will work with all other rehabilitation professionals to design the best course of treatment to address the patient's specific needs. In addition to the physician, the team will consist of rehabilitation nurses, physical, occupational or speech therapists, recreational therapists, case managers, social workers, neuropsychologists and others.
This multiphase, comprehensive approach helps Carolinas Rehabilitation exceed both regional and national standards in returning patients to their home environments. Team members consult regularly to coordinate care and to continually advance overall quality through program development and continuing education of team members.
Rehabilitation Care Our staff is experienced in working with individuals with stroke and are highly specialized in their field. Many of our nursing staff are Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurses (CRRN). These nurses bring excellent functional skills and a comprehensive approach to patient care. To help speed our patients' recovery, we offer intensive therapy during the inpatient stay, up to three hours per day. The therapy team works with the patient on the skills needed to perform a wide range of daily tasks before the patient returns home or to the community, so that they may live as independently as possible. Additionally, the rehabilitation team will educate family members to assist their loved ones.

Our Results We continually strive to meet excellent standards in our efforts to help patients who have sustained life-altering injuries return to their homes and communities. We carefully monitor our outcomes compared to similar facilities across the nation in an effort to continually meet or exceed national benchmarks.
Specialty Services Carolinas Rehabilitation offers several specialized stroke programs and services.
Outpatient Rehabilitation
Recognizing the need of our patients to receive outpatient services close to home and have family an integral part of the team, we offer comprehensive outpatient stroke rehabilitation at both Carolinas Rehabilitation- Main and Mount Holly. Therapy services are also offered at our outpatient facilities at CMC- University and Pineville. Our stroke specialized physicians continue to oversee and coordinate the patients' care to maximize each individual's recovery. The occupational, physical and speech-language therapists meet weekly to coordinate patient therapy goals and round with our physicians monthly. Patients meet with our physicians in our stroke rehabilitation clinic on a regular basis to monitor progress and update the plan of care.
