Brain Injury Program

Brain Injury Program at Carolinas RehabiliationWhen individuals have a brain injury, they turn to Carolinas Rehabilitation. As one of the top inpatient rehabilitation hospitals in the Southeast, Carolinas Rehabilitation is nationally recognized for providing outstanding rehabilitation services to patients who have experienced brain injuries. Our team of compassionate, experienced specialists can help to make a lifetime of difference for our patients and families.

We focus on generating knowledge that will support the integration of individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) disabilities into their communities. As a TBI Model System, we are allowed access and participation in a national database for the purpose of sharing knowledge about recovery following TBI, long-term problems and TBI-related medical issues. We hope to improve rehabilitation outcomes among the TBI population. Read more about the TBI Model System.

Interdisciplinary Team
Our comprehensive brain injury team has many years of experience and expertise in brain injury rehabilitation. Working collaboratively with the patient, our brain injury team individually tailors the patient's inpatient program so that it best meets the patient's individual needs and works together to help the patient return to the highest level of function possible.

Once a patient with brain injury is admitted to our facility, that patient is assigned to this highly specialized team, led by one of our dedicated brain injury specialized physicians. Read more about our Brain Injury Physicians. This physician will work with all other rehabilitation professionals to design the best course of treatment for each patient. In addition to the physician, the patient's team may consist of physical, occupational or speech therapists, recreational therapists, nurses, case managers, social workers, neuropsychologists, and others -- all working together to help move the patient through recovery and rehabilitation. This multiphase, comprehensive approach helps Carolinas Rehabilitation exceed both regional and national standards in returning patients to their home environments.

Our staff is experienced in working with individuals with brain injury and are highly specialized in their field. Many of our nursing staff are Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurses (CRRN) and bring excellent functional skills and a comprehensive approach to care. We offer a high number of hours of intensive therapy during the inpatient stay, up to four and a half hours per day.

Since many of our patients may need to learn or relearn different tasks of daily living, our team members work together with the patient and his or her caregivers to teach any necessary skills or procedures - all with the ultimate goal of returning our patients to their communities so that they may live as independently and fully as possible.

Our Results
We continually strive to meet excellent standards in our efforts to help patients who have sustained life-altering injuries return to their homes and communities. We carefully monitor our outcomes compared to similar facilities across the nation in an effort to continually meet or exceed standards.

Specialty Services
As a complement to our range of services, we also offer several specialized services for individuals with brain injury.

  • Emerging Responsiveness Program: This program is designed for people who have experienced a brain injury and are in a low level of consciousness. Once admitted, we will observe changes and responses to sensory stimuli, therapy and medication changes of the patient. Our goal is to increase arousal and awareness of the environment. If successful, the patient can be transferred to the brain injury program.
  • Project Star: This community-based program provides information, referrals, education, training and community programs to individuals with TBI and their families.
  • Carolinas Concussion Network
  • Secured Neurobehavioral Unit
  • Balance Assessment and Training
  • Voice Assessment and Training
  • Clinical Social Work
  • Upper Extremity Restoration

Outpatient Services
Once discharged from inpatient rehabilitation, patients may participate in our Outpatient Day Treatment Program. This comprehensive program meets five days a week and focuses on individual and group therapy to help integrate individuals back into school, work and the community.
